Association between infant and toddler gut microbiota composition and later executive functioning

Venla Huovinen, Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, Eeva Eskola, Giulio Benedetti et autres

Background: Studies indicate that alterations in gut microbiota composition (GMC) during the first 1,000 days of life are associated with neurodevelopment and further behavioral development. However, research on the associations between GMC and executive functions (EFs) in childhood is scarce. This study …

Temporal Associations Between Human Milk Metabolites and the Infant Gut Microbiome and metabolome

Heidi Isokääntä, Laura Perasto, Santosh Lamichhane, Minka Ovaska et autres

Abstract Introduction Human milk is vital in establishing a healthy infant gut microbiome. Gut microbes and their metabolites are important for host development. However, our understanding of how milk metabolites are connected to the gut microbiome and metabolome in early-life remains limited. …

Faecal transplantation from exuberant toddlers increases exploratory behaviour in rats

Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, James M. Collins, Eveliina Munukka, Saara Nolvi et autres

Abstract Background Behavioural phenotypes have previously been transferred via faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from patients with psychiatric disorders to rodents. Studies indicate that the gut microbiota composition may be linked to certain temperament traits, defined as biologically-based differences in emotional reactivity and …

Dynamics of gut metabolome and microbiota maturation during early life

Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, Santosh Lamichhane, Heidi Isokääntä, Partho Sen et autres

, were associated with microbial metabolites, especially secondary BAs, particularly in breastfed infants. Our results suggest that early-life gut microbiota associates with changes in metabolome composition, particularly BAs, which may have physiological implications.

Association of leisure time physical activity with gut microbiota composition in early adulthood

Hanna-Mari Boelius, Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, Marja A. Heiskanen, Eero A. Haapala et autres

Physical activity is associated with compositional changes in gut microbiota. Studies applying data from general populations exhibiting varying physical activity levels are scarce. This study investigated the associations between leisure time physical activity and gut microbiota composition in a general population of …

Skin microbiota variation in Indian families

Renuka Potbhare, Ameeta RaviKumar, Eveliina Munukka, Leo Lahti et autres

Background In India, joint families often encompass members spanning multiple generations cohabiting in the same household, thereby sharing the same ethnicity, genetics, dietary habits, lifestyles, and other living conditions. Such an extended family provides a unique opportunity to evaluate the effect of …

Appendicolith classification: physical and chemical properties of appendicoliths in patients with CT diagnosed acute appendicitis – a prospective cohort study

Sanja Vanhatalo, Ermei M. Mäkilä, Antti Hakanen, Eveliina Munukka et autres

OBJECTIVE: Appendicoliths are associated with a more complicated course of acute appendicitis and failure of non-operative treatment. We aimed to update the appendicolith classification originally described in 1966 and to assess the association of appendicolith characteristics with appendicitis severity. DESIGN: This prospective …

Association of Serum Trimethylamine-N-Oxide Concentration from Childhood to Early Adulthood with Age and Sex

Gunter Almer, Dietmar Enko, Noora Kartiosuo, Harri Niinikoski et autres

BACKGROUND: Primary prevention is the cornerstone of cardiometabolic health. In the randomized, controlled Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project (STRIP), dietary counseling intervention was given to children from infancy to 20 years of age and a follow-up was completed at age …

Early life gut microbial and metabolic shifts reflected in stool consistency- a gut transit time proxy

Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, Matilda Kråkström, Heidi Isokääntä, Leo Lahti et autres

ABSTRACT Transit time, fluid intake, diet, and overall gut health influence stool consistency. However, the relationships between the gut metabolome (microbial metabolites) and stool consistency in infants and young children remain poorly understood. Here, we analyzed the metabolome and microbiota of 618 …

High-throughput DNA extraction strategy for fecal microbiome studies

Heidi Isokääntä, Natalie Tomnikov, Sanja Vanhatalo, Eveliina Munukka et autres

ABSTRACT Microbiome studies are becoming larger in size to detect the potentially small effect that environmental factors have on our gut microbiomes, or that the microbiome has on our health. Therefore, fast and reproducible DNA isolation methods are needed to handle thousands …

Differences in Gut Microbiota Profiles and Microbiota Steroid Hormone Biosynthesis in Men with and Without Prostate Cancer

Sofia Kalinen, Teemu Kallonen, Marianne Gunell, Otto O. Ettala et autres

Background: Although prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer in men in Western countries, there is significant variability in geographical incidence. This might result from genetic factors, discrepancies in screening policies, or differences in lifestyle. Gut microbiota has recently been associated …
