Evaluation of QIAcuity digital polymerase chain reaction platform for the quantitation of JC and BK polyomaviruses

Matti E. Waris, Anniina Keskitalo, Riikka Österback, Henriikka Jyväs et autres

Monitoring the replication of human polyomaviruses (HPyV) JCPyV and BKPyV, either due to infection or re-activation, is important in patients with different immunosuppressive treatments. We evaluated whether digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) would be a feasible alternative to quantitative PCR (qPCR) for …

Faecal transplantation from exuberant toddlers increases exploratory behaviour in rats

Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, James M. Collins, Eveliina Munukka, Saara Nolvi et autres

Abstract Background Behavioural phenotypes have previously been transferred via faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from patients with psychiatric disorders to rodents. Studies indicate that the gut microbiota composition may be linked to certain temperament traits, defined as biologically-based differences in emotional reactivity and …

Dynamics of gut metabolome and microbiota maturation during early life

Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, Santosh Lamichhane, Heidi Isokääntä, Partho Sen et autres

, were associated with microbial metabolites, especially secondary BAs, particularly in breastfed infants. Our results suggest that early-life gut microbiota associates with changes in metabolome composition, particularly BAs, which may have physiological implications.

Association of leisure time physical activity with gut microbiota composition in early adulthood

Hanna-Mari Boelius, Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, Marja A. Heiskanen, Eero A. Haapala et autres

Physical activity is associated with compositional changes in gut microbiota. Studies applying data from general populations exhibiting varying physical activity levels are scarce. This study investigated the associations between leisure time physical activity and gut microbiota composition in a general population of …

Infant gut microbiota and negative and fear reactivity

Venla Huovinen, Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, Eeva‐Leena Kataja, Eveliina Munukka et autres

Abstract Background: Studies indicate that gut microbiota is related to neurodevelopmental and behavioral outcomes. Accordingly, early gut microbiota composition (GMC) has been linked to child temperament, but research is still scarce. The aim of this study was to examine how early GMC …

Dynamics of Gut Metabolome and Microbiome Maturation during Early Life

Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, Santosh Lamichhane, Heidi Isokääntä, Partho Sen et autres

Abstract Early-life gut microbiome-metabolome crosstalk has a pivotal role in the maintenance of host physiology. However, our understanding on early-life gut microbiome-metabolome maturation trajectories in humans remains limited. This study aims to explore the longitudinal patterns of gut metabolites during early life, …

Hair cortisol, cortisone and DHEA concentrations and the composition of microbiota in toddlers

Maarit K. Koskinen, Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, Susanna Kortesluoma, Paula Mustonen et autres

Animal research suggests that the gut microbiota and the HPA axis communicate in a bidirectional manner. However, human data, especially on early childhood, remain limited. In this exploratory design, we investigated the connections between long-term HPA axis functioning, measured as cortisol, cortisone …

Infant Left Amygdala Volume Is Negatively Associated with Fecal Microbiota Diversity

Anna‐Katariina Aatsinki, Jetro J. Tuulari, Eveliina Munukka, Leo Lahti et autres

Abstract Introduction Rodent studies have addressed the importance of early life gut microbiota in the development of emotional and social functioning. Studies in human infants are still scarce, but associations with cognition and temperament have been reported. Neuroimaging studies have linked the …
