A major quantitative trait locus qSBR11 from Oryza sativa ‘Milyang 44’ confers resistance to rice stink bugs

Masami Tsuzuki, Mitsuru Nakamura, Hiroyuki Kokaji, Hiroto Yamaguchi et autres

Stink bugs are major insect pests that damage rice after heading, causing pecky rice and sterility, which significantly reduce grain quality and yield. We identified a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) for stink bug resistance derived from the resistant donor variety ‘Milyang …

Evaluating Panicle Blast Progression in Six Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Cultivars/Lines Carrying Quantitative Resistance Genes

Yuriko Hayano‐Saito, Masahiko Kumagai, Mitsuru Nakamura, Tomofumi Yoshida et autres

Breeding rice crops that are resistant to rice blast is a protective and viable strategy. The proper characterization of the phenotypes of resistance (R) genes to leaf and panicle blast contributes to effective resistance breeding. However, observer subjectivity complicates the evaluation of …

Investigating the Mechanisms Underlying the Durability and Sustainable Use of Pb1 Gene-Mediated High Field Resistance to Rice Panicle Blast

Kiyoshi Tom Fujii, Taro Suzuki, Mitsuru Nakamura, Tomofumi Yoshida et autres

Rice blast, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, poses a significant threat to rice production. Rice blast susceptibility has been observed in Japanese rice varieties with excellent eating quality. Enhancing blast resistance is essential to ensure minimal use of agricultural chemicals. Two types of …

Resistance factors of pecky rice incidence caused by the rice stink bugs ( Leptocorisa chinensis, Nezara viridula ) in rice line CRR-99-95W

Kazuhiko Sugiura, Takao Oi, Toshiharu Tanaka, Aoi Hamagashira et autres

Pecky rice incidence caused by rice stink bugs greatly decreases the quality of rice grain and has come a big problem not only in Japan but also many other rice producing countries recently. In this study, antixenosis and tolerance were examined as …

Characterization of Six Partial Resistance Genes and One Quantitative Trait Locus to Blast Disease Using Near Isogenic Lines with a Susceptible Genetic Background of Indica Group Rice (Oryza sativa)

Hiroki Saito, Asami Tomita, Tomofumi Yoshida, Mitsuru Nakamura et autres

Seven near isogenic lines (NILs) for six partial blast-resistance genes— Pi35, pi21, Pi37(t)( Pi37-KRIL17), Pb1, and Pi34 (two: Pi34-Chubu32 and Pi34-Chugoku40, originating from different Japonica Group rice lines, ‘Chubu 32’ and ‘Chugoku 40’, respectively)—and one quantitative trait locus (QTL), PiPHL9, derived from …

The role of Oryza sativa L. ‘Milyang 44’ husks on the resistance to two rice stink bugs

Mitsuru Nakamura, Taro Suzuki, Tomofumi Yoshida, Takahiro A. Kato et autres

To elucidate the resistance mechanisms of the rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivar ‘Milyang 44’ against rice stink bugs, we compared the number of stylet sheaths, husk perforations, and feeding marks on the surface of the grains caused by Leptocorisa chinensis and Cletus …

Development of Methods for Assessing Resistance to Leptocorisa Chinensis of Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Using Cut Panicles

Kazuhiko Sugiura, Mitsuru Kato, Akira ITO, Yasuto Ide et autres

Identification and validation of QTLs for cold tolerance at the booting stage and other agronomic traits in a rice cross of a Japanese tolerant variety, Hananomai, and a NERICA parent, WAB56-104

Cornelius Mbathi Wainaina, Daigo Makihara, Mitsuru Nakamura, Akihiro Ikeda et autres

In Africa, cold temperatures occur in the highlands of East and Southern Africa and in some areas of the Sahel region of West Africa leading to substantial rice yield losses. Cold tolerance (CT) at booting stage on basis of spikelet fertility after …

Panicle blast 1 (Pb1) resistance is dependent on at least four QTLs in the rice genome

Haruhiko Inoue, Mitsuru Nakamura, Tatsumi Mizubayashi, Akira Takahashi et autres

BACKGROUND: Rice blast is the most serious disease afflicting rice and there is an urgent need for the use of disease resistance (R) genes in blast tolerance breeding programs. Pb1 is classified as a quantitative resistance gene and it does not have …
