私たちはわが国の糖尿病診療の実態を把握するべく1972年にアンケート調査を実施した.以来10年を経た今日,再び同様のアンケート調査を,糖尿病に関心の高い全国605の医療機関と398の日本糖尿病協会所属の患者会を対象に実施し,1972年の成績と比較し,今後の糖尿病医療について展望した.1)過去10年間にみられた変化としては,教育入院用の病室を有する施設の割合と糖尿病教室の平均開催回数,ならびに糖尿病専門外来の平均実施回数が増加した.2)医師1人当りの診療患者数は,大規模な施設では有意な減少が,しかし診療所や開業医家など小規模な施設では専門外来の開催回数を増やしてもなおそれの増加のあることが判明した.3)日本糖尿病協会加入の患者会を有する施設数は,10年前に比べて著しく増加したが,これは会員数の少ない小規模な会の増加によっている.4)一方,診療所と開業医家に所属する小規模な会では,独自の教育活動を行う上で限界があるなどから,地域ぐるみの会活動の推進が要望された.以上,過去10年間における糖尿病診療上好ましい変化がみられた反面,医療機関と患者会のいずれにおいても小規模なところほど問題点が多く,この点をどうするかが糖尿病診療の今後の課題としてクローズアップされた.
