短果枝が少ないとされるリンゴ‘錦秋’において，効率的な栽培法の基礎となる知見を得るため，結果枝の長さの分布構成や果実品質との関係を2年間調査した．‘錦秋’では，長さ約30 cmの長果枝が最も多く，種類別にみたときの存在比は，概ね短果枝20％，中果枝5％，長果枝75％であった．平均結果枝長も20 cm以上であり，長果枝が多い品種であることが確認できた．着果負担，果実品質とも標準的な2022年，着果負担の増大により果実品質が低下した2023年を通じてみると，果実肥大が優れる年には結果枝が長いほど果実重が小さくなり，枝長が30 cmを超えると300 gを下回る果実の頻度が増加した．また，酸度は枝長に応じてやや増加し，硬度やでんぷん指数からは枝が長いほど果実成熟がわずかに遅れる傾向が示唆されたものの，着色指数や糖度の変化は認められなかった．現実的に利用が想定できる結果枝長30 cm以下の範囲内での果実品質のばらつきの大きさと比較すると，結果枝長による品質変化は小さいと考えられた．腋芽果は頂芽果と比べてサイズは小さいが，糖度は高くなる傾向が認められた．‘錦秋’は，長果枝が多いために多着果でも葉果比が減少しづらく安定多収が可能である一方，品種の優れた特性である着色にも過繁茂による悪影響が認められる可能性があることから，整枝剪定で光環境を十分に改善することが高品質果の安定多収につながると推察された．
