Promoting Circular Economy and Waste Management UGA

Objectif officiel

Uganda is facing a growing waste management crisis due to rapid urbanization, increased consumption, and inadequate infrastructure, with projections indicating a 70% rise in waste generation by 2050. Current systems are overstretched, especially in cities like Kampala, leading to environmental and public health issues. Existing policies are fragmented and lack effective coordination.To address these challenges, the project proposes establishing a National Multistakeholder Platform for Waste Management, combining a physical convening body with a digital, GIS-enabled data hub. This platform will facilitate real-time data sharing, coordinated planning, and inclusive governance by integrating government, private sector, civil society, academia, and informal waste workers. The initiative will also drive innovation through a national circular economy challenge, supporting pilot projects and business models across multiple regions, with a focus on creating green jobs for women and youth. Additional components include awareness campaigns, training, and toolkits to promote behavioural change and improve waste management standards.Over an 18-month period, the project aims to operationalize the digital platform with at least seven municipalities, establish a national waste alliance, launch three circular economy pilots, and reach over 100,000 people through campaigns. Institutionalizing the platform within MoLG and aligning with national strategies is expected to ensure long-term sustainability and support Uganda’s transition to a data-driven, sustainable, and inclusive waste management system.
