The Access to Clean and Renewable Energy (ACRE) project is being implemented by the Ministry of Energy in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme. The Project commenced in 2020 and was expected to conclude in 2023, but it was granted an extension and will conclude in November 2024.The primary objective of UNDP energy programming is to increase access to modern electricity services in isolated rural communities through commercially viable mini-grids with a focus on the productive use of energy that operates in a self-sustaining manner and promotion of clean energy transition through innovative financing mechanisms for homes and industries, catalysing sustainable solar for health facilities and institutional capacity strengthening. The Advancing Energy Access and Sustainability Project Initiation Plan was developed as a bridging tool as the project design to succeed the Access to Clean and Renewable Energy project is finalised. The key objective of the initiation plan is to extend mini-grid distribution networks in selected sites, conduct an assessment to better understand UNDPs niche in providing energy solutions within the context of Malawis energy situation and strengthen the institutional structures and governance capacities for better mini-grid operations.
