FUNAE- Investment in Renewable Energy for economic and social development in rural Mozambique

Objectif officiel

This program will, in line with a RERD (Renewable Energy for Rural Development) programme already implemented by the Belgian Technical Cooperation and funded by both Belgium and the Netherlands, focus on provision of energy services from renewable sources (mainly hydro and solar) in rural areas. In addition to investing in new generating capacity and connections, particular attention will be given to operation and maintenance of the installations and to the financial sustainability of existing and new systems. For this, appropriate payment mechanisms for energy consumed will be introduced. The Government of Mozambique, in its strategic plan, put emphasis on the role of the private sector in the realization of universal access to sustainable energy. Therefore, this project seeks also to invest in appropriate measures to ensure a more conducive environment for private sector operators to play their part in the provision of electricity through renewable sources. In line with the existing RERD programme, RERD II will continue to focus on provision of energy services from renewable sources (mainly hydro and solar) in rural areas. In addition to investing in new generating capacity and connections, particular attention will be given to operation and maintenance of the installations and to the financial sustainability of existing and new systems. The FUNAE project, titled "Investment in Renewable Energy for economic and social development in rural Mozambique," is a continuation of the RERD project that aims to provide renewable energy services primarily from hydro and solar sources in rural areas. This phase 2 project focuses on investing in new generating capacity and connections, as well as operation and maintenance of installations, and ensuring financial sustainability of existing and new systems. The goal is to promote rural economic and social development through increased sustainable access to energy. To achieve this, appropriate payment mechanisms for energy consumption will be introduced, with the institutional partner invited to undertake necessary measures for long-term sustainability. The project seeks to create a more conducive environment for private sector operators to contribute to electricity provision through renewable sources, considering ongoing efforts by the Government of Mozambique and other development partners. The Fundo de Energia (FUNAE) will serve as the institutional partner for this project.
