Women Economic Empowerment through Renewable Energy in Niassa province

Mozambique faces significant challenges in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its National Development Strategy due to overlapping economic, climatic, and security crises. Frequent and severe weather events disproportionately impact the poorest and most vulnerable populations. The UNDP Mozambique Country Programme Document (CPD) 2022-2026 which also aligns with the UNSDCF outcomes, focuses on four strategic pillars: (a) human development, poverty reduction, gender equality, and public health (b) inclusive economic recovery and sustainable livelihoods (c) climate resilience and natural resource management (d) inclusive governance, justice, and social cohesion. These pillars are interdependent, with gender equality as a critical driver of progress. Empowering women, particularly in rural areas, through improved access to services and economic opportunities, is essential for achieving the SDGs and fostering inclusive decision-making. In Niassa Province, women face significant barriers to economic development, including limited access to energy, education, and resources. This project aims to address these challenges by establishing 5 solar hubs (10 kWp) to power women’s training centers and entrepreneurial activities, alongside deploying 25 standalone solar-powered irrigation systems (1.5 kW each) to support women smallholder farmers. These initiatives will enhance agricultural productivity, improve livelihoods, and promote gender equality. The Project Initiation Plan (PIP) will accelerate mobilization, staff recruitment, and community engagement, laying the groundwork for sustainable local development in Niassa.
