The project contributes to a change where improved sustainability requirements, primarily regarding energy efficiency and quality, are imposed on lighting and other electrical equipment. The initiative enhances the conditions for Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) to operate in the Kenyan market. Furthermore, it supports the green transition of the industry, initially focusing on the tea industry, and promotes more responsible handling of electronic waste in Kenya. The following effects of the initiative are anticipated: Economic Effects: The project's promotion of energy-efficient technology for productive use is expected to lead to increased efficiency in the private sector. Reduced energy costs help businesses increase their competitiveness by enabling savings and reinvestments, leading to job creation and overall economic development. The project will explore the potential and contribute to increased manufacturing of appliances and technical equipment in Kenya, which can significantly impact economic growth. By enhancing value creation in local businesses' value chains, crucial for Kenya's and Africa's development, this project can be seen as an important pilot in the area. There is an opportunity to reduce export dependency, benefiting local manufacturing and increased exports. The project is expected to contribute to the long-term competitiveness of the tea industry while promoting environmental sustainability and social justice through partnerships with the Ethical Tea Partnership and the Danish Institute for Human Rights. Other industries may also be involved. In supporting the green transition of the industry, there will be good opportunities for Swedish companies to sell their technology, in line with the government's reform agenda. By promoting energy-efficient technologies and equipment for productive use, the project will create employment opportunities across several sectors. For example, the current employment level for the cultivation and harvesting of eucalyptus per hectare is minimal. The transition to alternative land use can create improved employment opportunities. Energy-efficient methods and renewable technologies in the industry increase the demand for skilled labor, fostering knowledge development necessary for the green transition. The project also contributes to jobs in the handling and recycling of electronic waste. Social Effects: Through improved energy efficiency, renewable energy, and enhanced skills, the project creates opportunities for income generation, job creation, and improved living conditions. By addressing energy poverty and promoting inclusive economic development, especially in rural areas, the project can help lift households out of poverty and build resilience against climate-related shocks.
