ON THE PROBLEM OF SIDE EFFECTS DUE TO CANCER CHEMOTHERAPY AMONG ATOMIC BOMB SURVIVORS

Two cases of cancer in which administration of anticancer agents resulted in persistent bleeding similar to that in radiation sickness are reported: symptoms and progress are discussed. Attention is given to the difference in the frequency of side effects of anticancer chemotherapy for cancer patients exposed to radiation from the atomic bomb as compared to those not exposed. Side effects of anticancer chemotherapy on the digestive and hematopoietic systems were more frequent among those patients exposed to the bomb. It is suggested that survivors with malignancy might be suffering from latent hematopoietic disturbance. (H.M.G.)
