Pinpointing obsessive-compulsive symptom severity: Assessing hypersensitivity for symptom-eliciting visual cues using (frequency-tagging) EEG, eye tracking and physiological stress measures

In the present project, we will combine frequency-tagging EEG (FT-EEG) with newly designed symptom provocation techniques to investigate the neural sensitivity of OCD patients to symptom-provoking visual OCD-specific stimuli in a fast and objective manner. Using this method, we aim to objectively quantify OCD-related symptomatology and to monitor symptom severity throughout therapeutic interventions. While implementing FT-EEG in OCD constitutes the main focus of the project, we will complement this approach with the assessment of low-frequency oscillation power via EEG, subjective anxiety/discomfort via rating scales, attentional orienting and preferential looking/avoiding behavior via eye tracking, and with autonomic nervous system (ANS) stress physiology via heart rate measures and skin conductance, in order to obtain a comprehensive multimodal picture of the core OCD characteristics.
