Scientific research is increasingly global, digital, and interdisciplinary, yet its organizational structures remain largely centralized within institutional and geographic boundaries and constraints. This creates barriers to participation, limits inclusiveness, and constrains innovation, particularly for independent, early-career, and geographically dispersed researchers. At the same time, advances in digital collaboration tools, open science practices, and distributed governance models offer new opportunities to reimagine how research can be democratized, organized, and sustained. In this landscape, the Institute for Globally Distributed Open Research and Education (IGDORE) has emerged as a platform for open and distributed science, providing an institutional framework for independent researchers. However, there is still no widely accepted framework and tested models for how such distributed research networks can be effectively organized, governed, and sustained. This white paper is the first step in establishing such open, distributed research workflows. The aim is to describe the conceptual and methodological background for distributed open science collaboration. It articulates core principles, such as openness, transparency, inclusiveness, and FAIR data stewardship; proposes governance models, collaboration workflows, and IT tools enabling research without reliance on a centralized institutional core. Importantly, the document itself is the product of a small-scale proof of concept (PoC), in which a geographically distributed consortium collaboratively wrote, reviewed, and refined the draft. The PoC tests practical workflows, decision-making structures, authorship models, and tool ecosystems, generating insights into both the opportunities and limitations of distributed collaboration. The result is a set of best practices, governance templates, and implementation guidelines that can inform not only IGDORE researchers but also large-scale international research initiatives, including COST Actions and larger consortia with the potential to attract Horizon Europe consortia. By combining conceptual innovation with practical experimentation, this work contributes to developing a sustainable, inclusive, and trustworthy model for distributed research in the 21st century.
