National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) developed the first cloud profiling radar(SPIDER) in Japan taking advantage of experience of various airborne and spaceborne precipitation radar developments. Then NICT is developing the Cloud Profiling Radar on the EarthCARE satellite (EarthCARE/CPR). Moreover, simultaneously with development of a spaceborne radar, the calibration and evaluation radar for verifying the performance has been also developed. Although,the airborne radar has been developed for the verification, a development strategy is shifting to a ground-based calibration/validation radar. The development strategy of the calibration/evaluation radar for EarthCARE/CPR and next generation cloud profiling radar development concept are introduced.
