This policy paper, initiated by the Horizon Europe GIANT LEAPS project (grant no. 101059632), describes overarching conclusions from the multidisciplinary project work and recommendations to facilitate the dietary shift from animal-based to alternative proteins. A dietary transition from animal-based to alternative protein foods is needed to reduce the environmental footprint of our food system and to improve human health. Achieving this dietary transition is inherently complex as it is hindered by major knowledge gaps and affected by dietary habits, norms and culture, the current food environment, etc. Addressing the barriers involves a diverse group of actors. Within the EU-funded GIANT LEAPS project, research was performed across multiple domains of expertise downstream of primary production and raw ingredient processing to close gaps and identify the way forward to make the dietary transition a success.
