Abstract For millennia, “medicine–food homology” has identified numerous plants possessing both nutritional and therapeutic value. Modern research reveals that these medicinal and edible plants (MEPs) harbor bioactive constituents with an innate capacity for nanoscale self-organization, enabled by structural features such as π-conjugated systems and hydrogen bonding. Consequently, traditional decoction methods may have inadvertently exploited this nanoaggregation behavior. The therapeutic efficacy traditionally attributed to MEPs may therefore derive partially from spontaneously formed nanoassemblies that enhance bioavailability. This inherent “nano-readiness” renders MEPs uniquely amenable to modern nanotechnological intervention. This review proposes that MEP modernization should focus on recognizing and optimizing the nanoscale potential encoded within their molecular structures, thereby establishing a foundation for next-generation nanotherapeutics that bridge traditional wisdom with precision medicine.
