Role of educators as mentors, guides, and learning designers from academicians’ perspectives in Malaysia

Driven by globalisation, technological advancements, and the transition toward a knowledge-based economy, the landscape of higher education in Malaysia has undergone a significant paradigm shift. This paper explores the evolving responsibilities of modern educators, moving away from traditional, passive knowledge transmission toward multi-dimensional, dynamic roles as mentors, advisors, and learning designers. Aligning with the strategic objectives of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015–2025, the study focuses extensively on the holistic impact of academic mentorship. Analysis indicates that effective mentorship comprehensively enhances students' intellectual, emotional, and professional trajectories. Beyond guiding undergraduate and postgraduate research, academic mentors provide vital psychological support to alleviate student anxiety while bridging the transition into the workforce through industry networking and career guidance. Ultimately, the paper highlights that tailored mentorship is crucial for fostering inclusive education within Malaysia's highly diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic student landscape.
