Transparency and Regulatory Compliance of Physical Blind Box Products in Mainland China

This research examines the transparency and regulatory compliance of physical blind boxes commercially sold in Mainland China. Blind boxes contain randomised items or collectibles. This gambling-like characteristic makes them conceptually similar to video game “loot boxes,” and they have drawn attention from regulators in Mainland China, if not yet elsewhere. Based on Guidelines on Rules for Blind Box Business Operation (for Trial Implementation) in Mainland China, we assess the information disclosures on blind box packaging, focusing on probability disclosures, age restriction notices, the visual prominence of their presentation, and the accuracy of the information provided. We will also check whether basic information about the product that is required to be provided has been provided. We also intend to conduct exploratory analysis on other aspects, including eventually opening the blind boxes to study their content and the presentation thereof.
