Comparative effectiveness of antidepressants and antipsychotics for management of alcohol use disorder and associated symptoms/comorbidities: a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized trials

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic, relapsing condition characterized by compulsive alcohol consumption despite negative consequences. It is often associated with mental health comorbidities, including depression, anxiety, and psychotic symptoms, which are frequently managed with antidepressants and antipsychotics. However, the effectiveness and safety of these medications in individuals with AUD remain uncertain, leading to inconsistent clinical practices and potential risks. This systematic review and network meta-analysis will assess the comparative effectiveness and safety of antidepressants and antipsychotics in management of AUD. By synthesizing the available evidence, this review aims to clarify treatment outcomes, identify research gaps, and support evidence-based clinical guidelines for management of AUD.
