Early home environment as a function of parental alcohol use, AUD, and remission

Studies that have modeled parental recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD) have generally found that adolescent offspring of recovered parents had reduced risk for early drinking and behavioral problems relative to their counterparts whose parents had unremitted AUD. Few such studies have included measures of the home environment during offspring adolescence. In the current study, we will use multigenerational family data from a high-risk sample to examine variation in the adolescent home environments of offspring as a function of parental alcohol use, alcohol use disorder (AUD), and remission from alcohol use disorder. We expect offspring of remitted parents to report a less adverse home environment (e.g., better relationship with parents, higher household income) than offspring of parents with unremitted AUD. Our broad research question is: Are there distinct latent classes of adolescent home environments based on patterns of parental behaviors, family cohesion, and psychosocial resources? Do these groupings differ based on parental AUD/remission status?
