The study of sensation and perception can be understood as the study of how we know stuff and how this allows us to do stuff. Imagine a character named Fred, who is trying to get a snack from an apple tree. Perceptual scientists seek to understand how he knows where the tree is, what it means, and how he can use that information to get a snack. This book covers the three main approaches to this question: the biological approach, the traditional approach, and the ecological approach. To understand the differences between these approaches, you have to understand the assumptions of each approach. The first section of this book will cover the biological approach. The main assumption of the biological approach is that all experiences can be understood biologically.
