Some people who study perceiving and acting are absolutely convinced that ecological is the only way to understand how it is that all varieties of organisms perform all varieties of everyday behaviors. Those who are less convinced, however, often raise the same concerns about the ecological approach. Such concerns often take the form of questions that start, “But what about …?” For example, but what about illusions? But what about improvements in perceiving? But what about bottom-up or top-down influences on perception? But what about the brain? But what about the chemical senses? This chapter attempts to address these concerns by either answering these questions or showing how they might be answered.
