Understanding Kshipra Marma – A Conceptual Exploration from Modern and Sushruta’s Perspectives

Acharya Sushruta , the pioneer of Ayurvedic surgery, identified 107 critical anatomical areas known as Marmas. Kṣhipra Marma is a very sensitive place in the limbs that can lead to discomfort, deformity, and even death. Structurally it is classified as a Snayu Marma (tendon/nerve-dominant), it has dual prognostic relevance such as Kalantara Praṇahara (delayed fatality) and, in certain severe conditions it act as Sadyopraṇahara (instant death). Marma references were from classical writings ( Sushruta, Charaka , and Ashtanga Sangraha ), as well as Dalhana, Ghanekara , and anatomy from B.D. Chaurasia and Gray’s. Kṣhipra Marma , located at the first intermetacarpal and intermetatarsal gaps in upper and lower limbs respectively, is a dense network of nerves, tendons, and arteries. In the upper limb, it is associated with the recurrent branch of the median nerve, the princeps pollicis artery, and the first lumbrical muscle. In the lower limb, it is associated with the deep peroneal nerve, dorsalis pedis artery, and tendons such as flexor hallucis brevis. This neuro-vascular complexity explains why trauma here causes rapid systemic effects such as hypovolemic shock and convulsions ( Akshepaka ). It is concluded that Kshipra Marma is located at the junction of the thumb-index finger and great toe-second toe in upper and lower limbs respectively, involving important neurological and tendinous tissues. Modern anatomy identifies Kshipra Marma as comprising the recurrent median nerve, deep peroneal nerve, along with vascular and muscular structures.
