Exploration des attentes informationnelles des patients sur la santé planétaire de la part des médecins généralistes en Charente-Maritime

Introduction: Environmental changes are currently taking place on a global scale with consequences for human health. One of the roles of the general practitioner highlighted in the literature is disseminating information to raise awareness. However, we have little data on the expectations expressed by patients. Objective: The main objective of this study was to describe the informational expectations of their general practitioner in a region particularly vulnerable to environmental change. Method: A qualitative observational study using individual semi-directed interviews inspired by grounded theory was conducted from July 2023 to December 2023 in two practices in Charente-Maritime. Results: The patients surveyed were concerned about current future and future environmental changes, but did not fully understand the possible impacts on their health. In this context, the medical consultation, seen from the angle of care was not a place where they expected to receive information on planetary health. However, they were open to exchange, if it took place, and their general practitioner seemed to be a relevant actor. Certain needs were suggested by our study, notably the need for reliable, concrete information tailored to each individual and the need for dialogue. Conclusion: To better support patients in understanding current environmental phenomena and their consequences on health, it seems necessary for GPs to be proactive in initiating and personalizing discussions and personalizing it. To help in this process, it would be interesting to develop communication tools for practitioners. Including other health professionals would also be a way of raising awareness of planetary health.
