WIP: Improving Codebook Application for Studying Engineering Intuition
Résumé fourni par la source
This work-in-progress paper expands recent qualitative research designed to capture engineering intuition. An emergent codebook was introduced to illustrate the use of intuition in engineering problem solving. Experts, irrespective of discipline, often use intuition to make decisions for uncertain, complex, and constrained problems. The Leveraging Intuition Towards Engineering Solutions (LITES) framework specifically describes engineering experts' use of intuition during constrained problem-solving. The present work focuses on refining the definitions of codes from the emergent LITES codebook. This effort is motivated by coding discrepancies observed between new coders and more experienced coders on the research team when using the LITES codebook on subsequent projects. These discrepancies represent a limitation of the current LITES codebook. A refined LITES codebook is intended to improve accuracy and consistency of interpretation by scholars outside the original research team to better support further study of engineering intuition. Preliminary findings described here include refined definitions and descriptors for three codes of the LITES codebook: Constraints, Outcome, and Individual Conditions.
