Acceptability of SPACE for COPD© delivered as a maintenance programme following pulmonary rehabilitation discharge

Background: Post Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR), the biopsychosocial benefits often decline. PR maintenance is recommended, however, detail lacks on what this entails. SPACE for COPD© is an evidenced-based self-management intervention which could maintain PR benefits. Aims and objectives: We evaluated the acceptability of SPACE for COPD© as a maintenance option following PR. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews and focus groups with participants and intervention facilitators. These were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using Framework Analysis. Results: 17 participants were interviewed; 13(76.5%) completers, 5(29.4%) received a group-based intervention, 4(23.5%) received 1-1, 8(47.1%) received hybrid. Two focus groups were conducted with 8 facilitators; 6(75%) physiotherapists, 1(12.5%) nurse, and 1(12.5%) health psychologist. Analysis generated six themes conceptualised in Figure 1. erj;66/suppl_69/PA1781/F1 F1 F1 Conclusions: Facilitators were instrumental to the intervention’s success. Participants’ needed the right resources and environment, belief in the importance of exercise, and to set meaningful health goals to ensure engagement and perceived positive outcomes. Adaptions made during the Covid-19 pandemic created a menu of options. Building upon this personalisation is required to ensure the intervention is accessible and patient-centred.
