Data sharing is an increasingly essential component of clinical research, especially in the context of neuroscience, where research teams are often large, multidisciplinary collaborations. A critical component of effective data sharing is a common standard for data exchange, which supports both sharing of raw data and a variety of metadata. Data collected from wearables can provide important context to understand patient state and well-being providing insight into the patient's life in and out of the clinic. This allows researchers to better interpret neural and behavioral data, and assess the effectiveness of therapies. Neurodata Without Borders (NWB), with its supporting suite of tools and online archives, offers a promising medium for data sharing, but does not support the sort of human-oriented wearable data that is essential in clinical neuroscience. We describe and implement an NWB extension that enables NWB to support a wide variety of data modalities recorded from wearable devices and handle multiple concurrent estimates of the same metric from independent devices. A python implementation is available on GitHub, and example data on the EMBER archive. This package, with support from data sharing platforms, will enable better collaborations, more reproducible analysis, and the development of better foundational models of disorders.
