In this paper, a low-frequency(LF) finite element time domain(FETD) method is proposed for solving transient coupled electromagnetic(EM)-thermal problems. It originates from the simulation of lightning effects. Considering the double-exponential waveform of lightning, with a maximum frequency of 105 Hz, it can be regarded as a LF problem. We used a model that separates the conductive and non-conductive regions, with the current source placed in the non-conductive part. By imposing specific boundary conditions, this approach ensures the uniqueness of the magnetic vector potential during computation. Magnetoquasistatic form of Maxwell equations is used in this paper, which omits displacement current to make calculation more effective without losing accuracy. Electric field is obtained from magnetic vector potential, which is then used to determine the resulting Joule heat. The temperature change subsequently alters the electrical parameters, ultimately achieving EM-thermal coupling. At last, numerical examples are presented to validate the accuracy of this method.
