Taiwan announced the Human Biobank Management Act in 2010 [1] to establish a legal and ethical foundation for storing, managing, and utilizing participants’ biospecimens and health data. Over the years, many hospitals and research institutes have established biobanks, allowing secondary use for academic research and industrial drug development. The National Biobank Consortium of Taiwan (NBCT) was established in 2019 to create a domestic network that strengthens connections and promotes the efficiency of biobank usage. The NBCT is a government-funded programme that collaborates with 38 biobanks, including 33 hospital-based biobanks and 5 from community/research institutes (including Taiwan Biobank [2] and Taiwan MJ Cohort [3]) In 2025, >1 million participants’ samples and data are aggregated through NBCT and >170 000 individuals are cancer patients [4]. The NBCT is managed by the National Health Research Institutes, which aims to aggregate and harmonize electronic health records from 33 distinct hospitals. The NBCT common data model (CDM) system was designed and implemented as a hospital-based distributed system to facilitate a streamlined process for extracting, transforming, and loading data, rather than relying on traditional manual chart review by clinicians or research staff.
