The Multiple Ethical Paradigms

This chapter provides descriptions of four ethical paradigms. They are the ethics of justice, critique, care, and the profession. The first three ethics have been discussed by educators for some time, while the last ethical paradigm, that of the profession, has been developed more recently. Thus, the chapter will provide an overview of the ethics of justice, critique, and care, while the newer ethic of the profession will be described in more detail. This latter paradigm consists of the code of ethics from professional organizations; the ethics of the community; personal codes of ethics; and individual professional codes. Located at the heart of this ethics are the best interests of the student. Also included in the ethics of the profession are clashing codes, professional judgment, and professional decision making.
