The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) concept of "Wu Zang Cang Shen" (the Five Viscera Storing Spirit) views visceral functions and mental health as an integrated system. This holistic paradigm aligns closely with the modern scientific understanding of the gut-brain axis—a bidirectional communication network linking the gut microbiota and the central nervous system. This review elucidates current evidence on how probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium modulate neuroactive compounds (e.g., short-chain fatty acids, γ-aminobutyric acid), enhance intestinal barrier integrity, and regulate immune signaling to alleviate anxiety, depression, and neurodegenerative diseases. From a nutritional intervention perspective, improving the viability and bioavailability of probiotics remains a major challenge. We discuss emerging delivery technologies, such as microencapsulation, that protect probiotics from gastric acidity and enable targeted intestinal release, thereby enhancing their therapeutic efficacy. We underscore the synergistic integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and contemporary neuroscience in this review, proposing a holistic framework for advancing brain health through combined therapeutic paradigms. This interdisciplinary perspective opens new avenues for the development of nutrition-based interventions targeting neurodegenerative diseases.
