Technological Advances and Innovative Tools for Revolutionizing Yam Research and Productivity
Le résumé fourni par la source
Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is a critical staple crop, particularly in West Africa, where it serves as a primary source of carbohydrates for millions and contributes significantly to rural livelihoods. However, yam production faces numerous challenges, including pest and disease pressures, declining soil fertility, and the impacts of climate change. Advancements in technology and innovative practices are transforming yam agriculture to address these issues. Traditional breeding techniques are being enhanced by molecular tools such as marker-assisted selection, genomic selection, and CRISPR/Cas9, enabling the development of high-yielding, disease-resistant, and climate-resilient varieties. Tissue culture and propagation methods ensure the availability of disease-free planting materials, while digital agriculture tools such as remote sensing and precision farming optimize resource use and productivity. Sustainable practices, including integrated pest management and climate-smart agriculture, further mitigate environmental impacts and enhance resilience. Post-harvest innovations, such as improved storage systems, reduce losses and maintain tuber quality. In this book chapter, we explored most appropriate technologies that offer a holistic approach to boosting yam production, ensuring food security, and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
