The value of a life course approach to the health consequences of climate change

Abstract Climate change, initiated by the Industrial Revolution, has resulted in a warming planet with increased extreme weather events. In addition, pollutant exposures are rapidly increasing. Exposures to both extreme weather and pollution have direct and indirect negative impacts on health. While most research to date has focused on the short-term impacts of climate change on health, chronic and long-term impacts are a huge concern. In addition, climate change-related exposures can act intergenerationally. A life course epidemiology approach to climate change is therefore valuable and essential to understand how early life exposures have a long-term impact on health. This chapter summarizes the current state of climate change, the current research to understand climate-change-related health effects and the importance of a life course epidemiology approach to understanding climate change.
