The possibilities of Mexidol in the complex therapy of arterial hypertension

A review of the literature is devoted to the effects of the ethylmethylhydroxypyridine succinate (mexidol) in patients with arterial hypertension. The analysis of 44 sources of Russian and foreign literature showed more effective achievement of the target values of blood pressure, prevention of severe complications in hypertensive crises in patients with mexidol therapy. The evidence of the positive effect of cytoprotective therapy on the condition of the left ventricle and vascular wall is considered. The results of large-scale studies demonstrating the effective correction of cognitive dysfunction of the brain using mexidol are presented. The role of the drug in stabilizing of biochemical processes, including lipid peroxidation, glucose and cholesterol metabolism, which determines the pleiotropic effects of mexidol in patients with hypertension, is emphasized.
