This chapter focuses on the Prison Voices project which comprised two creative components, a prison documentary theatre production, and an audio podcast. Both components received initial approval from Massey University Human Ethics Committee and the New Zealand Department of Corrections. While the creative research team was able to deliver the documentary theatre production in 2019, COVID and institutional resistance delayed and threatened our efforts to complete the audio project. Four years on, our ethical and political commitment to our prison participants to share their stories with a wider public audience has shifted our project from a focus on voice to a focus on listening. As a result, we have had to employ a responsive methodology informed by what we call a “protective dramaturgy.” In this chapter, we outline changing methods and efforts to deliver on the Prison Voices project in response to these challenges. We also outline our initial thoughts about what a protective dramaturgy might entail and how this might engender forms of intimate and political listening. The chapter will describe how the project engages with our capacities to listen and acknowledge the humanity of others as a precursor to engaging ideas of abolition, decarceration, community healing, and restoration.
