By contrast with the participants with psychosis, the group with bipolar diagnoses reported a significant dominance of demanding modes and linked the activation of these with progression into manic mood phases. Angry mode activation was also connected with, and intensified during, manic mood states for this group. Punitive modes too were reported by most of our participants, but by contrast with the demanding modes, punitive modes were linked with depressed mood states rather than manic ones. Vulnerable mode activation was, interestingly, linked with experiences of both manic and low mood states by these participants, suggesting a painful sense of isolation and separateness from others that accompanies not only depression but also the elevated mood states in mania. We will draw here on the detailed subjective accounts of the study participants to illustrate how the interplay of mode activations might relate to escalating and alternating mood states as these unfold over time. As with the group experiencing psychosis, the two coping modes described by the bipolar group were the compliant surrender and detached protector, with no overcompensating modes being discernible from the individuals’ responses.
