Temporal and Generational Changes in Religions, Politics, and Society

Religious and political perspectives and behaviors are regularly in flux. How religion and politics change, however, has important implications for societies around the world. This chapter discusses the distinction between time periods and generations, and how both are related to changes in religion and politics. Period changes in religion and politics are often spurred on by specific events, such as economic crises or war. Such changes can be rapid, but they can also be ephemeral. Generational changes, on the other hand, may be more gradual, but they can also be more enduring as cohort replacement leads to fundamental changes in societies. Importantly, such changes are often connected to social class, economic prosperity, and the educational composition of birth cohorts. Throughout this chapter, I summarize research on temporal and generational changes in religion and politics, focusing on how such changes are related to social class, economic conditions, and educational contexts. Time periods and generations both play a role in changes in religion and politics, but their roles are distinct, and they have potentially different long-term implications.
