Smart and Intelligent Packaging of Foods

Food safety is one of the most critical factors responsible for affecting public health and social well-being. As reported in 2017 by World Health Organization (WHO), due tso contaminated food supplies, approximately 600 million cases of illness were recorded, and 4,20,000 people expired every year because of foodborne contamination. The proper packaging and monitoring of the quality of food throughout the supply chain is a possible solution to control foodborne illnesses. Active and intelligent packaging is an emerging technology which has been dramatically enhanced in recent years, with attention to notifying and attracting customers about food quality. In 2024, the world market for smart packaging will reach $26.7 billion (Nemes et al., 2020). Smart packaging means combining packaging systems with implanted sensor technology for several types of products in the food and pharmaceutical domain. It is used to extend shelf life, check freshness, exhibit quality details, and increase product and consumer safety.
