Background: Central data collection in national and international registries is essential to answer open questions on rare diseases such as Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia. For this reason, the Swiss Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Registry (CH-PCD) was founded in 2013. Methods: The registry records PCD patients of all ages, treated and residing in Switzerland. It collects information on phenotypes, examination results, clinical course and hospitalizations. Results: CH-PCD has identified 136 patients with PCD (Feb 2019), representing a prevalence of 1 in 63,000 people diagnosed with PCD in Switzerland. Prevalence differs by age being highest (about 1 in 20,000) in children and young adults <30 years. Management is decentralised with most physicians caring for ≤4 patients. Very few patients were registered by non-pulmonologists. Current age of patients ranges from 1 to 73 years; 4 patients have died, 2 from PCD complications . Completeness of medical information recorded in patient charts varied and was less complete for adult patients. 75 patients had at least one positive diagnostic test result; of them 41 patients had a definite PCD diagnosis based on guidelines. Median age at diagnosis for these 75 patients was 2.4 years in children younger than 18, 8.7 years in younger adults aged 18-40 and 39 in older adults >40 years. Conclusion: CH-PCD is a valuable tool that describes PCD clinical practice in Switzerland and contributes data to international collaborative studies. The registry allows nested studies.
