Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common arrhythmias and contributes to an increased risk of strokes. Unfortunately, AF frequently remains undetected, suggesting the unmet medical needs of more extended and reliable AF screening. There are several reports to screen AF with the Omron automated blood pressure (BP) monitor, however, the results were inconsistent probably because one time BP measurement was not enough to detect AF with high reliability. Indeed, the device instruction of automated BP monitors from another company requires 3 BP measurements to detect AF. Purpose: The aim of this study was to optimize the number of BP measurements to detect AF with the a specific monitor. Methods: Inclusion criteria was aged over 20 years without a pacemaker or defibrillator. A total of 303 patients was enrolled (mean age: 72.2 years, 69.8% male). The recorded real-time single lead ECG were analyzed by two cardiologists and AF was diagnosed in 44 patients (14.5%) among them. BP measurements were performed three times per one patient and the number of irregular heartbeat occurrences was recorded in each measurement.
