High resolution incoherent Thomson scattering diagnostic for the Resonant Antenna Ion Device (RAID) helicon plasmas

C. Stollberg, R Karimov, Ph. Guittienne, R. Jacquier et autres

We present a recent upgrade of the incoherent Thomson scattering (TS) diagnostic for the Resonant Antenna Ion Device (RAID), a linear plasma source based on helicon excitation operated at the Swiss Plasma Center at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. By operating in …

Helicon Wave-Plasma Interaction in Linear and Toroidal Geometries with Birdcage Resonant Antennas

S. P. H. Vincent, R Karimov, Ph. Guittienne, Cyrille Sepulchre et autres

Helicon wave fundamental properties are explored experimentally and numerically in linear and toroidal geometries in the low-temperature plasma devices RAID and TORPEX. The helicon wave-plasma interaction is studied in terms of wave damping, propagation conditions in toroidal geometry, and nonlinear behavior.

Determination of atomic hydrogen density and fluorescence decay time by 1D resolved, picosecond TALIF in the RAID linear device

Lyes Kadi, M. Baquero-Ruiz, Y. Andrèbe, Ph. Guittienne et autres

Abstract We report on the first 1D resolved two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) measurements of atomic hydrogen (H) performed in the Resonant Antenna Ion Device using a picosecond laser system. The results are obtained across a cylindrical plasma column with peak electron …

First Thomson scattering results from AWAKE’s helicon plasma source

C. Stollberg, Ph. Guittienne, R Karimov, A. Sublet et autres

Abstract We present the first results of electron density and temperature measurements obtained from Thomson scattering at the helicon plasma source (HPS) for the AWAKE project. These measurements are compared to simulation results from a 1D power and particle balance model (PPM), …

A double-ended helicon source to symmetrize RAID plasma

Remy Jacquier, R. Agnello, M. Baquero-Ruiz, H. Bergerioux et autres

Neutral Beam Injectors (NBI) for post-DEMO-like reactors must achieve a neutralization efficiency (fraction neutrals/ions) above 70%. To reach this, NBIs based on negative ions are necessary and an innovative concept of this type of injector is based on photo-neutralization. In this context, …

A 1.5D fluid—Monte Carlo model of a hydrogen helicon plasma

R. Agnello, G. Fubiani, I. Furno, Ph. Guittienne et autres

Abstract Helicon plasma sources operating with hydrogen or deuterium might be attractive for fusion applications due to their higher power efficiency compared to inductive radiofrequency plasma sources. In recent years, the resonant antenna ion device (RAID) has been investigating the physics of …

Helicon wave plasma generated by a resonant birdcage antenna: magnetic field measurements and analysis in the RAID linear device

Ph. Guittienne, Remy Jacquier, B. Pouradier Duteil, Alan A. Howling et autres

Abstract This paper describes a helicon-wave-sustained plasma generated by a novel birdcage antenna with cosine azimuthal current distribution. The resonant birdcage source maintains a stable intense plasma column from low (300 W) to high (10 kW) steady-state RF power in hydrogen or …

Negative hydrogen ion dynamics inside the plasma volume of a linear device: Estimates from particle-in-cell calculations

G. Fubiani, R. Agnello, I. Furno, Laurent Garrigues et autres

Negative hydrogen or deuterium ions are the precursor particles used to generate a high power beam of neutrals in order to heat the tokamak plasma core of magnetic fusion devices, inject current, and to some extent control instabilities. In the case of …
