Rediscovery of the Red-And-White Commensal Shrimp Athanopsis dentipes (Alpheidae), Revealing an Expanded Host Range Among Spoon Worms (Annelida: Thalassematidae)

Tomoya Hanaoka, Isao Hirabayashi, Takahiro Sugiyama, Keiichi Nomura et autres

The commensal shrimp genus Athanopsis Coutière, 1897 (Alpheidae) includes nine species worldwide. Almost all congeners have been confirmed to be associated with spoon worms (Annelida: Thalassematidae). Athanopsis dentipes Miya, 1980 was originally described about 45 years ago based only on the male …

Modern Coral Taxonomy Requires Reproducible Data Alongside Field Observations—Comments on Veron et al. (2025)

Peter F. Cowman, Tom C. L. Bridge, Tracy D. Ainsworth, Francesca Benzoni et autres

The recent review by Veron et al. (2025) posits that quantitative genomic evidence used to understand coral evolution should be secondary to species hypotheses derived from expert opinion based on field experience. The authors argue that morphological “biological entities” should take precedence …

Paragoniastrea variabilis Kishi, Nomura & Fukami, sp. nov. (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Scleractinia), a new coral species previously considered as a variant of Paragoniastrea deformis, from Japan and northern Taiwan

Daigo Kishi, Keiichi Nomura, Yoko Inès Nozawa, Seiji Arakaki et autres

A new zooxanthellate scleractinian coral, Paragoniastrea variabilis Kishi, Nomura & Fukami, sp. nov. (Scleractinia, Merulinidae), is described from non-coral reef regions of Japan and northern Taiwan. This new species was previously recognized as a morphological variant of Paragoniastrea deformis (Veron, 1990) and …

Identity of Montipora angulata (Lamarck, 1816) (Scleractinia, Acroporidae)

Keiichi Nomura, Andrew H. Baird, Go Suzuki

Montipora angulata (Lamarck, 1816) is one of the oldest known species in the genus, but the original description is very brief and not illustrated, so the identity of this species remains uncertain. Here, we clarify the morphological features and variation of M. …

First record in 135 years since the original description of a zooxanthellate scleractinian coral, Montipora stalagmites Ortmann, 1888 collected from Minami- Daitojima Island (Okinawa, Japan), and the Montipora fauna of this Island

Keiichi Nomura, Andrew H. Baird, Go Suzuki

A survey of Montipora corals fauna was conducted around Minami-Daitojima Island in June 2022 and a total of eight species (Montipora nodosa, Montipora sp. OKINAWATOGE, M. peltiformis, M. sinensis, M. stalagmites, M. turgescens, M. venosa and Montipora sp.) were recorded. Of these …

The problem of Japanese names for corals (2): EDA-MIDORIISHI / HIME-EDA-MIDORIISHI

Hironobu Fukami, Keiichi Nomura, Takuma Mezaki, Hiroyuki Yokochi

Topics on current taxonomy of corals, I Issues of Japanese names of corals (1): KUSHIHADA-MIDORIISHI / NANYOU-MIDORIISHI

Hironobu Fukami, Keiichi Nomura, Takuma Mezaki, Go Suzuki et autres

Topics on current taxonomy of corals, II Why is it difficult to identify the species of Montipora corals?

Keiichi Nomura, Go Suzuki
