超高齢社会の本邦において認知症への対策は喫緊の課題であり，国の認知症施策推進総合戦略（新オレンジプラン）において歯科医師にも積極的な関与が求められている．歯学研究において，認知機能と口腔機能の関連は，関心が高いテーマで，これまでに基礎・臨床研究が多数報告されている．その一方，医科専門分野では口腔因子が認知機能の低下または認知症の発症のリスク因子として共有されるに至っていない．（公社）日本補綴歯科学会は，認知機能と口腔機能との相関について新たな研究を展開するために，（公社）日本老年精神医学会と連携して研究プロジェクトを推進している．本稿では， ECCOプロジェクトを設立した経緯と活動内容を概説する．
