Cocoa flavanols protect endothelial function during prolonged sitting in healthy older adults

Alessio Daniele, Samuel J. E. Lucas, Catarina Rendeiro

< 0.001). Flavanols had no effect on the muscle microvasculature. These findings indicate that flavanol-rich foods may be efficacious nutritional strategies to counteract sitting-induced endothelial impairments during prolonged sitting in older adults, but do not alleviate sitting-induced increases in BP.

Strategies to Augment the Cardiovascular System and Acutely Enhance Exercise Performance in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury: A Systematic Scoping Review

Daniel D. Hodgkiss, Shane J. T. Balthazaar, Cameron M. Gee, Shin‐Yi Chiou et autres

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) affects motor and autonomic functions that reduce exercise capacity. Specifically, the loss of sympathetic drive following SCI at or above the sixth thoracic segment (≥ T6) can impair cardiovascular responses to exercise. This systematic scoping review aimed …

Heat thermotherapy to improve cardiovascular function and cardiometabolic health: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Ben S. Price, Samuel J. E. Lucas, Ashley Paul Akerman, Rachel E. Gilworth et autres

Abstract Heat thermotherapy (HT) is reported to promote cardiovascular (CV) and cardiometabolic health benefits. This systematic review and meta‐analysis (CRD42020193669) empirically investigated the efficacy of HT in improving CV and cardiometabolic parameters by assessing responses to single versus multiple HT bouts. Databases …

Dietary flavanols preserve upper‐ and lower‐limb endothelial function during sitting in high‐ and low‐fit young healthy males

Alessio Daniele, Samuel J. E. Lucas, Catarina Rendeiro

Sedentary behaviour is very prevalent in modern societies, with young adults spending approximately 6 h/day sitting. Sitting induces declines in endothelial function, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Nutrition during sitting may be used as a strategy to minimise such effects. This …

Cerebral pressure-flow relationship directional sensitivity in healthy lowlanders and natives at high altitude

Shahrzad Soleimani Dehnavi, Jonathan D. Smirl, Marc‐Antoine Roy, Lawrence Labrecque et autres

Cerebral blood flow changes are buffered when blood pressure increases versus decreases. The current findings suggest that acute exposure and partial acclimatization to high altitude do not influence the presence of this phenomenon in lowlanders. Preservation of this hysteresis-like pattern across all …

Explaining tip-of-the-tongue experiences in older adults: The role of brain-based and cardiorespiratory fitness factors

Foyzul Rahman, Kamen A. Tsvetanov, J.-M. Féron, Karen J. Mullinger et autres

Cognitive decline associated with healthy ageing is multifactorial: brain-based and lifestyle factors uniquely and jointly contribute to distinct neurocognitive trajectories of ageing. To evaluate existing models of neurocognitive ageing such as compensation, maintenance, or reserve, we explore how various known brain-based and …

The Impact of Cocoa Flavanols in Modulating Resting Cerebral Blood Flow During Prolonged Sitting in Healthy Young and Older Adults

Alessio Daniele, Samuel J. E. Lucas, Catarina Rendeiro

Background: Sitting is highly prevalent among young and older adults and can transiently reduce cerebral blood flow. Dietary flavanols confer benefits to the peripheral vasculature and may be effective at counteracting the impact of sitting in the cerebrovasculature. The aim of this …

The effects of acute exposure to prolonged sitting, with and without interruption, on central and peripheral pulse wave velocity: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Arsalan Moinuddin, Craig A. Paterson, Louise A. Turner, Keeron J. Stone et autres

Introduction: Sedentary behavior, specifically an acute bout of prolonged uninterrupted sitting, is associated with heightened cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, with increased arterial stiffness (AS) being implicated as a principal pathophysiological mechanism. The current systematic review, with meta-analysis, aimed to consolidate the AS …

Mapping the evidence on the impact of heat stress on exercise and work performance in females: a scoping review

Rachel E. Gilworth, Bethany D. Skinner, Daniel D. Hodgkiss, Samuel J. E. Lucas et autres

Increasing numbers of females are performing in increasingly hot environments. This scoping review aimed to 1) collate evidence on the effects of environmental heat stress on aerobic exercise performance and work productivity in females specifically, and 2) explore sex differences in the …

Analytical and clinical validation of PATHWAY HER2 (4B5) assay for assessment of HER2-low/HER2-ultralow status and eligibility for trastuzumab deruxtecan in DESTINY-Breast06

Roberto Salgado, A. Bardia, G. Curigliano, Xichun Hu et autres

BACKGROUND: The DESTINY-Breast06 study demonstrated a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in progression-free survival benefit with trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) versus chemotherapy treatment of physician's choice in patients with hormone receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer (mBC) whose tumors were scored as human epidermal …

Brain derived neurotrophic factor and secreted amyloid precursor protein‐α response to moderate and high intensity exercise

Felicity S. E. Spencer, Richard J. Elsworthy, Leigh Breen, Jonathan R. B. Bishop et autres

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and secreted amyloid precursor protein-alpha (sAPPα) promote neuronal growth but are lower in people with Alzheimer's Disease (AD). BDNF increases after exercise, but the response may vary with exercise intensity and across blood fractions. While sAPPα rises post-exercise …

Intra-apheresis Cycling to Improve the Clinical Efficacy of Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Donations

Alex J. Wadley, Fendi Pradana, Tarondeep Nijjar, Mark Trehane Drayson et autres

Peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation is the primary procedure used to collect haemopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for transplantation in individuals with haematological malignancies. More than 90,000 HSC transplants take place globally each year, and there is an increasing need to guarantee …
