Revealing laser and electron beam evolution in 10-GeV-class laser-plasma accelerators

Huaijing Tang, A. Picksley, Carlo De Benedetti, R. Li et autres

Guiding relativistically intense laser pulses in low-density plasmas enables extended acceleration lengths in laser-plasma accelerators (LPAs), allowing for the production of multi-GeV electron beams. Quantitative interpretation of such experiments is often limited by substantial uncertainties in key plasma parameters, particularly the transverse …

Measurement of directional muon beams generated at the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator

Davide Terzani, S. Kisyov, Stephen H. Greenberg, L. T. Le Pottier et autres

We present the detection of directional muon beams produced using a PW laser facility at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The muon source is a multi-GeV electron beam generated in a 30 cm laser-plasma accelerator interacting with a high- Z converter target. …

Longitudinal tapering in gas jets for increased efficiency of 10-GeV class laser plasma accelerators

R. Li, A. Picksley, Carlo De Benedetti, F. Filippi et autres

Modern laser plasma accelerators often require plasma waveguides tens of centimeters long to propagate a high-intensity drive laser pulse. Tapering the longitudinal gas density profile in 10 cm scale gas jets could allow for single stage laser plasma acceleration well beyond 10 …

Pointing stabilization of a 1 Hz high-power laser via machine learning

Alessio Amodio, Dan Wang, Curtis J. Berger, Hai-En Tsai et autres

Abstract High-power lasers are vital for particle acceleration, imaging, fusion and materials processing, requiring precise control and high-energy delivery. Laser plasma accelerators (LPAs) demand laser positional stability at focus to ensure consistent electron beams in applications such as X-ray free-electron lasers and …

Machine Learning based Pointing Stabilization for Low-Repetition-Rate High Power Lasers

Alessio Amodio, Dan Wang, Curtis J. Berger, Hai-En Tsai et autres

A novel machine-learning based closed-loop control system to enhance spatial transverse stability of high-power lasers, overcoming the bandwidth limitations of traditional feedback systems. Tested at the BELLA Center, it achieved sub-µrad stability, marking the first successful predictive control in high-power low-repetition-rate facility.

Matched Guiding and Controlled Injection in Dark-Current-Free, 10-GeV-Class, Channel-Guided Laser-Plasma Accelerators

A. Picksley, Joy Stackhouse, C. Benedetti, Kei Nakamura et autres

We measure the high-intensity laser propagation throughout meter-scale, channel-guided laser-plasma accelerators by adjusting the length of the plasma channel on a shot-by-shot basis, showing high-quality guiding of 500 TW laser pulses over 30 cm in a hydrogen plasma of density n_{0}≈1×10^{17} cm^{-3}. …

Guided Mode Evolution and Ionization Injection in Meter-Scale Multi-GeV Laser Wakefield Accelerators

J. E. Shrock, E. Rockafellow, B. Miao, Manh S. Le et autres

We show that multi-GeV laser wakefield electron accelerators in meter-scale, low density hydrodynamic plasma waveguides operate in a new nonlinear propagation regime dominated by sustained beating of lowest order modes of the ponderomotively modified channel; this occurs whether or not the injected …

Resonant excitation of plasma waves in a plasma channel

A. J. Ross, J. Chappell, Johannes van de Wetering, J. Cowley et autres

We demonstrate resonant excitation of a plasma wave by a train of short laser pulses guided in a preformed plasma channel, for parameters relevant to a plasma-modulated plasma accelerator (P-MoPA). We show experimentally that a train of N≈10 short pulses, of total …

All-Optical GeV Electron Bunch Generation in a Laser-Plasma Accelerator via Truncated-Channel Injection

A. Picksley, J. Chappell, Emily Archer, Nicolas Bourgeois et autres

We describe a simple scheme, truncated-channel injection, to inject electrons directly into the wakefield driven by a high-intensity laser pulse guided in an all-optical plasma channel. We use this approach to generate dark-current-free 1.2 GeV, 4.5% relative energy spread electron bunches with …
