Demonstrating Japanese Green and Digital Solutions for Sustainable Airport Logistics in Southern Africa
Projet national en Eswatini, financé par le Programme des Nations unies pour le développement.
Objectif officiel
Eswatini has made a major public investment in the King Mswati III International Airport (KMIII) as a strategic national asset to support trade, industrialisation, and regional connectivity under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Yet the airport’s contribution to livelihoods and private-sector growth remains constrained by high electricity costs, carbon-intensive operations, and inefficient cargo handling and coordination systems. These constraints directly affect the reliability and affordability of air-cargo services, increasing losses for time-sensitive goods, weakening cold-chain integrity, and limiting the ability of exporters and logistics operators to compete in regional and global markets. In this context, energy insecurity and logistics inefficiency are not only infrastructure challenges, but human security risks that undermine jobs, incomes, and enterprise resilience. The project responds to these challenges by deploying airport greening and smart logistics investments that reduce operational risks, protect livelihoods, and strengthen the business environment for trade. It focuses on improving export readiness, reliability, and efficiency at KMIII. By reducing energy costs for cargo operations, improving the reliability of cold-chain services, and strengthening coordination among airport authorities, airlines, freight operators, and customs, the project directly addresses the practical constraints faced by exporters and logistics firms. The intervention is designed to reduce losses, shorten turnaround times, and improve predictability for air-cargo–based trade, thereby enabling private-sector actors to operate more competitively under AfCFTA conditions.
