Integrated Environmental Management and Climate Resilience Programme (IEMCRP)
Projet national en Gambie, financé par le Programme des Nations unies pour le développement.
Objectif officiel
The Gambia faces mounting environmental and climate challenges, including deforestation, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and coastal erosion. Rising temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns are disrupting agriculture, tourism, fisheries, and public health. Coastal communities are increasingly vulnerable to floods and sea-level rise, highlighting the need for robust disaster risk mitigation.Municipal solid waste generation exceeds 530 tons daily, projected to reach over 1,000 tons by 2030, with plastic pollution rising sharply. Infrastructure for chemical and hazardous waste management remains limited, posing risks to ecosystems and human health The country’s Blue Economy—anchored in its coastline and river systems—offers sustainable growth in fisheries, tourism, maritime transport, and renewable energy. However, overexploitation and pollution threaten its long-term viability. Biodiversity management is critical to restoring degraded habitats and enhancing ecosystem resilience.Aligned with its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC2), The Gambia aims to reduce emissions by 49.7% by 2030. This project supports national goals by promoting clean energy and clean cooking solutions, strengthening natural resource and biodiversity management, and advancing gender-responsive economic empowerment through targeted training.Under UNDP’s Environment and Climate Resilience pillar, strategic interventions will focus on climate and disaster risk management, sustainable energy access, solid and chemical waste management, biodiversity conservation, and inclusive livelihoods.
