Activity under preparation Nexus Energy Water in Zambia 2.0 (NEWZA 2.0)

Objectif officiel

The underlying principle of the NEWZA 2.0, under a Team Europe approach, is to improve the water supply through introduction of renewable solar energy sources and energy efficiency measures in the North-Western and Copperbelt Provinces, where the Zambian segment of the Lobito Corridor is mainly located. To prepare the two provinces for the forecasted economic and demographic growth, it is crucial to improve basic service delivery in support of the development of mineral and agricultural value chains, as well as to enhance local communities resilience in those targeted provinces.The water supply will be enhanced through increasing energy autonomy of three Commercial Utilities (CUs) in conjunction with improving their operational and financial performance. Through the provision of renewable solar power to the CUs, they will become more climate resilient and independent from the existing unreliable and climateclimate vulnerable energy grid. This action will have a transformative impact on the financial viability of CUs operations and will free over 40-50GWh/per year of electricity for other economic activities and in particular for the growing power demand related to the mining operations across the Critical Raw Materials (CRM) value chains as well as for the manufacturing and agriculture sectors, that have an important growth potential along the new economic corridor.Geographically, the action is deployed along the Lobito Corridor, covering the 2 provinces of North-Western and Copperbelt through the respective commercial water utilities, all covering primarily urban and peri-urban service areas: North-Western Water and Sanitation Company (Solwezi), Kafubu Water and Sanitation Compnay (Ndola) and Mulonga Water and Sanitation Company (Chingola). These Utilities have been selected due to their alignment with the political priorities of the 8NDP and with the recently concluded Mid-Term Review, and the two MoUs signed with Zambia on the development of CRM value chains and the Lobito Corridor. NEWZA 2.0 also continues bringing support to the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (5, 6, 7, 10 and 13), the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, the new European Consensus on Development (Gateway) and the Gender Action Plan III. Thus, key objectives under the Gender Action Plan III are reflected in this Action, particularly around ensuring women and girls have improved access to clean and safe water supply.
