Makambako-Songea credit

Objectif officiel

Reference being made to the DG 's decision 2008-006268 dated 2008-12-10 , where Sweden decided to contribute with 500 million kronor. The project consists of two parts: a) 220 kV transmission line connecting Songea to national grid in Makambako. The system provides electricity to replace 7 MW/hr diesel power plant in Songea , thereby reducing carbon emissions. It also provides the capacity for expansion of distribution systems in the region, and b) rural distribution system. The system intends to provide the rural and urban areas in southern Tanzania with sustainable access to electricity . Approximately 27 000 new connections are expected to result from the project. The contribution includes a 132 kV transmission line financed through a concessionary credit of 210 million and a distribution system that is funded by a grant of SEK 290 million. Due to the increasing socio - economic aktivities coupled with population growth and increased agricultural activity in the region and the planned installation of new power plants to be connected to the transmission line , Tanzania has decided to increase the transmission line capacity, from 132 kV to 220 kV. Meanwhile, the project costs have increased due to higher international prices for raw materials compared to the prices when the project's cost estimate was made (2006) . The estimated cost increase amounts to $ 20 million (about 132 million SEK), with reference to Ministry of Finance letter No. CDA.18/541/01 dated 22 April 2013.
