SNV Study on sustainable mkts for household energy

More than 80% of Zambians depend on woodfuel for cooking. For rural areas, the percentage of people that are dependent on woodfuel for cooking is estimated to be 97% while for the urban areas the estimate is 58%. For the urban areas the bulk of the woodfuel is made up of charcoal, which is produced and consumed in a very inefficient manner. This means that there is a lot of wastage both in the production and consumption process which puts a strain on the forests from a sustainable natural resource management perspctive and also on the finances of the households from an economic perspective.Further, Zambia is reputed to have one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, with charcoal production being cited as one of the major contributing factors. This study aims to explore the options that are feasible in Zambia in terms of providing alternatives for cooking in households in terms of both the fuels and the technologies that are available as well as seek to draw lessons from projects that have been implemented in the past. The study will also look at how consumers perceive the the various options available and what their preferences would be. The study will further undertake a mapping of the variuos critical players in the sector ranging from Government,Private sector to NGOs. The outcome of the study is envisaged to provide input into the formulation of a project for household energy using an M4P approach.
